Chapter Thirteen

Tamika knew she had come on too strong and sent him away spooked about their kiss. She wasn’t sure what had come over her. Perhaps she was emboldened by the wine or maybe she was just tired of being lonely. There was something about him that beckoned to her. It was more than just his good looks and soft spoken demeanor. Still, she was ashamed of herself for being so brazen. It wasn’t like her and he must think her an awful human being for behaving so forwardly when she was barely widowed.

She suddenly felt tired. Stepping into the kitchen for a drink of water, she found Thomas leaning precariously against the counter, drinking a beer. For some reason, she felt alarmed in a way she had never been before with Thomas. He had always made her feel safe and secure. Now, she had so many questions she wanted to ask him and couldn’t. Mostly, she felt a bit fearful with him living in the house, but didn’t dare risk alienating him before Jon told her he was not involved or came to remove him from her house.

“Drinking on the job?” she asked, trying to make it sound as if she were teasing him. It was out of character, in addition to being unfitting.

“Not exactly,” he said with that broad smile of his. “I received a check today from Mr. Schmidt. I was waiting for you to come home so that I could give you my resignation,” he told her, seeming a little apprehensive.

“Of course, yes. I should have expected that you would move on with your life once you were financially able. Things have been such a chaotic mess lately that I just didn’t consider it would be so soon,” she said.

“If you need me to stay until you can replace me, then I will,” he said earnestly.

“No. I don’t intend to replace you,” she said. “Once the dust settles, I plan to put this mausoleum on the market and buy myself something smaller and more intimate...more me. I won’t need the large staff Martin seemed to deem necessary.”

“I am glad to hear that, Tamika. You deserve to be happy,” he said. “I should be out of here by the end of the week.”

“Where will you go?” she asked.

“I don’t know right now. I plan to put my things in storage here and go spend a couple of weeks with the kids. Hopefully, I can find a place in LA near them. I have a lot of time to make up for,” he said.

“I can understand that. Just keep in touch. I’d hate to lose you completely. In addition to being an employee, you’ve been a good friend,” she said. She realized that even if Thomas was guilty, he seemed to have no ill will toward her. In all honesty, if he had killed Martin, he had done her a favor and he was probably well aware of that, too.

He grabbed her a beer from the fridge and they sat at the kitchen counter chatting about their plans for the future.
